Today we completed the Periodontal Dialysis port insertion. It was an outpatient procedure and probably took around an hour while at the hospital for the actual procedure. They did not put him under, and he was awake during the procedure. They numbed the area and inserted into a catheter that will be used to do the exchange in the future. Learn more about PD here.
Basically, liquid goes into the abdominal cavity and sits for awhile. While in the abdominal cavity the liquid takes the toxins come out and flows into another bag. Thanks to science and the advances in medicine we will eventually be able to do PD at home.
Over the next month we are looking at Dialysis at the hospital 3x a week for at least 6 hours at a time. We will also be attending training and educational classes while doing PD so that Tyler can do this on his own in the future. It will be a long road, but we will get there. Eventually he will be doing PD at home 4x a day and then eventually at night.
If you would like to help my friend has started a Go Fund Me to help with loss of wages and all the back-and-forth expenses. I am lucky that I live in Canada and the medications will be covered.
God Bless you BC Renal Program for helping cover the cost of life essential medications for BC Residents!
