Managing Sodium Intake in Kidney Disease

One of the hardest parts of this journey, I am told, is the diet changes. People who struggle with kidney disease and kidney failure have to monitor how much sodium, potassium, and phosphorous they intake. They sometimes also need to monitor their output and their urine to look for signs of disease progression or the need for support. If you are used to eating whatever you want and being inactive, it can be quite a change to put into place. But with Kidney Disease, food becomes medicine. You are eating to live.

I have found that I have to get back to the basics when it comes to cooking. I will look for low sodium options. I will now be making soup from scratch – stay tuned for chicken pho! Did you know a can of campbell’s chunky chicken noodle soup has 830mg of Sodium?

According to Heart.org the ideal limit of no more than 1,500 mg per day for most adults. Keep in mind that many processed foods and other foods might have hidden salts that you are not aware of. High salt intake can also lead to high blood pressure which is a risk factor for Chronic Kidney Disease.
